Where Technology Meets Creativity

Detroit has always been a city of artists and innovators. From the Motown sound that defined an era to the street art that adorns our buildings, creativity is woven into the fabric of our city. Now, that same creative spirit is finding expression in code.

Creative Coding in Detroit

Creative coding—the practice of using programming as a medium for artistic expression—has found a natural home in Detroit. Our city's rich artistic heritage provides the perfect backdrop for exploring the intersection of technology and creativity.

Local developers are creating everything from interactive art installations to generative music systems, proving that code can be as expressive as any traditional art form.

Projects That Inspire

One of my favorite local projects is an interactive installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts that uses computer vision to create music based on visitors' movements. The code reads body positions and translates them into melodies, creating a unique experience for each person.

"Code is our paintbrush, and Detroit is our canvas. Every project we create tells a story about our city and its people."

The Community Aspect

What makes Detroit's creative coding scene special is its emphasis on community. Artists and developers regularly collaborate on projects, sharing skills and perspectives. These collaborations often result in work that neither group could create alone.

Educational Opportunities

Local organizations are working to make creative coding accessible to everyone. Workshops and classes teach people of all ages how to use code as a creative tool, from elementary school students learning to program robots to seniors creating digital art.

The Future of Creative Tech

As Detroit continues to grow as a tech hub, I believe creative coding will play an increasingly important role. Our city's artistic heritage combined with its growing tech community creates unique opportunities for innovation.

Whether you're a traditional artist looking to explore digital mediums or a developer interested in creative expression, Detroit offers a supportive environment for experimentation and growth.

Getting Involved

If you're interested in creative coding, Detroit has plenty of opportunities to get involved:

  • Attend workshops at local makerspaces
  • Join creative coding meetups
  • Collaborate on community art projects
  • Learn from local artists and developers

Remember, you don't need to be an expert programmer to start creating with code. The most important thing is having a creative vision and the willingness to learn.

Reflecting on 2025, A Year of Realignment

Last year’s goals weren’t about completion—they were about accountability. Through reflection, failure, and realignment, I was reminded that the most enduring systems aren’t defined by speed or scale, but by the values encoded into what we build.

From Buenos Aires to Detroit: Deploying the Next Wave of Community Tech

Community tech is reaching a turning point — with mini-apps, embedded wallets powered by account abstraction, and x402 payments making seamless onboarding and real-world value exchange truly practical. Building Mystic Island at the inaugural Ethereum World’s Fair in Buenos Aires, and experiencing the city’s blend of architectural grandeur and economic complexity, highlighted how this infrastructure can unlock new creative, community-driven economies. This post reflects on that moment and why it matters for Detroit and beyond.
