đ ď¸ Open October Build Session #1 Recap
Our first build session brought together new and returning contributors to share updates and project ideas.
What if artificial intelligence didnât just belong to Big Tech?
What if AI was designed by communitiesâfor communitiesâso it could actually serve us?
Thatâs the future weâre working toward.
And we want you to be part of it.
We're launching a collaborative project to build a public, community-driven AI systemâstarting with local events, organizers, artists, and initiatives here in Detroit.
This AI wonât sell your data.
It wonât optimize for clicks.
Itâll help us organize, document, and grow our communities.
Weâll start by collecting and structuring public informationâwhoâs speaking, whatâs happening, and why it mattersâso people can:
Discover events and gatherings that align with their values
Learn from local voices and creators
Connect with others working toward shared goals
Onboard more easily into local ecosystems
This is about building an AI assistant for civic and creative life, grounded in our own valuesânot Silicon Valleyâs.
This project is part of the Public AI Creative Fellowship, a national program hosted by Metagov and supported by the Center for Cultural Innovation.
Each selected fellow receives a $5,000 stipend and works over a six-month period to shape a public vision of AI that is inclusive, accountable, and community-rooted.
đ Application Deadline: August 15, 2025
đ
Fellowship begins: September 29, 2025
Iâm applying as the Creative Technologistâbuilding interactive tools to help communities better organize and engage with public life.
Now Iâm looking for two collaborators to complete the team:
đĽ A Video Creator
Someone who can tell this story visuallyâthrough a short documentary, video series, or multimedia piece that brings the stakes of public AI to life.
âď¸ A Writer
Someone who can craft a compelling narrativeâspeculative, persuasive, or poeticâthat reshapes how we imagine AI, infrastructure, and collective power.
These roles can be filled by one person or two. Youâll join as a full fellow with a $5,000 stipend and creative freedom to help shape this project from the ground up.
Want to apply together? Email me: john@dpop.tech
Know someone perfect for this? Please share this with them.
Curious but not sure where you fit? Letâs talk. There may be more ways to collaborate beyond the fellowship.
This is a call to reimagine what AI could beânot just a product, but public infrastructure.
Letâs make sure itâs rooted in us.
Letâs build it here.
Letâs build it together.

OpenOctober kickoff recap: creatives + technologists aligning to build open, local-first tools for Detroit. Submit your project by Oct 7.

At this monthâs Vibe Coding meetup, we explored how AI tools like Cursor can speed up projectsâor derail them without clear direction. I shared the Renaissance City LaunchPad, a cultural shift and support ecosystem empowering community organizers to build, own, and sustain their own technology.
